The Lower Depths Tap Room

A total of 5 words could round up everything great about Lower Depths - tater tots, big beer menu. One of the better selections of beer I've seen so far, The Lower Depths had about 12-15 beers on tap, and a larger selection of bottles. With quirky descriptions and short summaries of each beer, even a novice like me could easily find something that sounded like a good bet.

Once you find a good beer, the next challenge is picking which "gourmet" version of tater tots you would like with your meal. With toppings ranging from salsa and bacon with delightfully tangy sauce, the very hot plate arrives with enough for 4 hungry people - at least. While the rest of the menu looked promising, after about 1/4 of the tots, there just wasn't room to try something else.

Something not to miss is the small menu (one of 4 on the table) that pairs food with beer choices. In particular it was nice to see the ice cream sandwiches paired with a chocolate porter. Who could say no to that?

With a location about a block from Fenway park I'm sure that during spring and summer months the small patio and interior are packed with fans who couldn't get a ticket. With $1 hot dogs, and toppings for an additional $1, maybe the better deal is to stay at the bar.

I'd put this as a good bet, and will be back again soon.
